Phytoplankton blooms in the Huon Estuary, Tasmania: top-down or bottom-up control?

چکیده
The roles of “top-down” and “bottom-up” factors were investigated in terms of their influence on the diatom and dinoflagellate abundances in the microtidal, salt wedge Huon Estuary, Tasmania, Australia. Long-term (1996–2005) changes in Chl a, the peridinin:Chl a ratio and the abundance of autotrophic dinoflagellates were observed to coincide with the warming of regional surface waters. There were significant seasonal differences in pigment-specific net growth rates for Chl a, peridinin and fucoxanthin. Diatoms dominated the spring bloom when species such as Skeletonema costatum had the highest net growth rates and fucoxanthin-specific gross growth rates were 0.9 day. During late summer, the peridinin-specific grazing mortality was significantly less than the fucoxanthin-specific grazing mortality and dinoflagellates increased their dominance of the phytoplankton community. This late summer relaxation of grazing pressure on dinoflagellates was associated with a decline in the overall abundance of microheterotroph (MH) grazers and a peak in the abundance, biomass and estimated grazing rates of mesozooplankton. We suggest the composition of the autumn phytoplankton community was dependent upon a trophic cascade where mesozooplankton, such as Noctiluca scintillans, preyed upon MHs and reduced their grazing upon some species of dinoflagellates.

What minimal models cannot tell: a comment on "A model of phytoplankton blooms".
Huppert et al. analyzed a simple model describing bottom-up control of phytoplankton blooms. While we appreciate the mathematical aspects of this article, we feel that the fit of their model to data of Lake Kinneret is overly optimistic because the time axis was rescaled in an arbitrary way. Furthermore, one of the main conclusions of the article (bottom-up control is more likely to occur than ...
متن کاملLimits to top-down control of phytoplankton by oysters in Chesapeake Bay
Restoration of the oyster Crassostrea virginica population in Chesapeake Bay is often advocated as an easy solution for controlling phytoplankton blooms. Even at their pre-colonial densities, oysters are unlikely to have controlled blooms, despite the fact that sediment cores suggest that pre-colonial spring blooms were smaller than at present. Lack of access to all bay water and low springtime...
متن کاملBottom-up excitable models of phytoplankton blooms.
A simple nutrient-phytoplankton model is used to explore the dynamics of phytoplankton blooms. The model exhibits excitable behaviour in the sense that a large scale outbreak can only be triggered when a critical nutrient threshold is exceeded. The model takes into account several features often neglected but whose combined effect proves very important: (i) rapid nutrient recycling associated w...
متن کاملEvent-Related Potentials of Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing of Emotional Faces
Introduction: Emotional stimulus is processed automatically in a bottom-up way or can be processed voluntarily in a top-down way. Imaging studies have indicated that bottom-up and top-down processing are mediated through different neural systems. However, temporal differentiation of top-down versus bottom-up processing of facial emotional expressions has remained to be clarified. The present st...

The present study aimed to examine any possible relevance of perfectionism as a personal trait variable, in moderating the effectiveness of meta-cognitive instruction on bottom-up and top-down sub-processes of listening comprehension with a sample of EFL learners in Iranian context. To this end, 94 female EFL learners were selected from among 136 EFL learners at Andisheh Language Institute in M...
